What are the duties of an elder?

Elders are charged with the spiritual welfare of the congregation, individually and corporately.

Each elder shall be assigned to groups of congregational members and be spiritually responsible for them, and make calls on members who have been absent for 3 consecutive weeks to provide assistance to their spiritual well-being.

The elders assist the pastor in the conduct of worship services, and assist the pastor in providing scriptural counsel in difficult cases and in finding peaceful and God pleasing solutions to personal problems which may arise withing the congregation.

Elders shall maintain discipline within the congregation according to the scripture, the Lutheran Confessions, and Articles III and IV of the church constitution.

The elders shall assist the pastor and his family in providing for his personal and spiritual well being.

The elders shall oversee the scheduling of the ushers, acolytes, readers, greeters, and those in charge of fellowship for the worship services. The elders shall be responsible for supervising the altar guild in the care, use and maintenance of the sacred vessels, the altar and it's furnishings and vestments, and the coordination of all church and chancel decorations.

The elders, with the pastor, will publish the schedule for communion services, approve the forms of worship, liturgies and hymns for use in the worship and special services.

The elders receive all requests for admission, transfer, and release of membership in the congregation.
